AbstractETE (Experimento Tokamak Esf´erico) is a low aspect ratio tokamak with a major radius R=0.30m designed for a plasma current of 200kA with a toroidal magnetic field up to 0.4T. This paper will report the progress in the operation of ETE since the first tokamak discharge was obtained at the end of 2000 producing a plasma current of 12kA with a toroidal field of 0.1T. The research program of ETE takes advantage of the low aspect ratio configuration (A=1.5) focusing on aspects of the plasma edge physics and methods of plasma heating by radiofrequency waves. Two important aspects of the program are the development of hot plasma diagnostics and training in tokamak operation. The experimental activities during 2003 aimed for a better plasma formation and diagnostics implementation. Breakdown is easily obtained with pre-ionization provided by a hot filament electron emitter. Vacuum wall conditioning has been improved with baking, glow discharge cleaning and usual tokamak operation. Measurements of stray magnetic fields were carried out and eddy current eects have been modeled. Energy of the capacitor banks is being continuously increased to achieve the design parameters. The Thomson scattering system is being upgraded for multipoint operation using a time-delay technique based on optical fibers of dierent lengths. First measurements were obtained using the fast neutral lithium-beam probe developed for plasma edge studies. Improved designs of the hollow electron beam gun for a 6.7GHz monotron have been tested. This high-power microwave source is being considered for pre-ionization and electron-cyclotron-resonance plasma heating experiments. Theoretical studies were mostly carried out on aspects of the neoclassical theory related to the bootstrap current and plasma resistivity.
